Part 2- The 3 basic Business Models:

 

When it comes to internet home businesses, you might be forgiven for thinking that there are literally thousands of potential opportunities out there. Anyone who has ever expressed an interest in owning a home based business will have undoubtedly been bombarded with e-mails all offering fabulous wealth for little effort. But when you look closer at it, there are actually only a few real options that can be easily categorised;

 

 

1) Multi-Level-Marketing opportunities:

 

This is where you join a company that offer some form of product or service and you build up a network of “business associates” by  initially selling them the product or service for a (normally fairly small) commission. During this process you also sell them the idea of joining the same business so that they can go on the build their own network in the same way. The basic idea is that you then get a small  commission (often called a residual) from everything they sell as they build up their own network and so on, so that everyone in the  “up line” (those who joined before you) and in the “down line” (those who joined after you) gets a small chunk of money each time. This is nothing new and has been around for years under the guise of things like planning and migrated to the internet some years back. This business model has been working since well before the internet was ever thought of and, for some, works very well.

 

There are, however, a number of drawbacks to the MLM business model which are almost never mentioned in any of the sales pitches.

 

Because each product sale only earns a small commission it takes an awful lot of sales to get any real financial benefit. The model relies  on the building of a large network of like minded individuals who would all be furiously recruiting and selling to make the system start to  gain any worthwhile residual income. This, in itself, presents problems because people are not machines and have varying degrees of success. Those who struggle need constant help and encouragement and many simply drop out altogether, thereby leaving gaps. This, in turn, often means that a lot of time and effort is spent on training and not on selling.

 

Another major problem arises when you have a successful “associate” who decides, for whatever reason, to jump ship and join a different MLM company, more often than not taking a big chunk of his “down line” with him. This particular issue has become more prevalent since the advent of the internet as more and more slightly different products or services are launched. The possibility to be in at the start of a new launch and thereby be as near to the top of the chain as possible often proves too tempting for many.

 

There may be many different products or services being offered out there under many guises but they are, essentially, all the same if they use this business model, despite what they might claim. Be aware also, that this model requires constant personal contact and selling and often a requirement to hold stock.

 

 

2) Affiliate Marketing Opportunities:

 

This is where you basically market someone else’s product or service for a commission on each sale that can be directly identified as originating from you. This is all done electronically via a third party who also track the sales and pay the relevant commissions.

 

The key to this business model lies in your ability to successfully attract a potential buyer to your website in order to direct them to the site of the seller’s product you happen to be promoting, via an internet link which carries a special identity code.

 

There are literally thousands of different products and services promoted this way and the commissions are normally anything from 25% to 75% of the selling price. Some of the advantages of affiliate marketing are that it’s done entirely electronically, requires no personal contact or selling and no buying, holding or shipping of stock. There is also no direct joining/investment fee needed and no limit on the number of affiliate products or services you can promote.

 

Some internet marketers are extremely successful at affiliate marketing and many others use it as an addition to other opportunities they are involved in.

 

The biggest drawback of the affiliate marketing business model is the difficulty in attracting potential buyers to your website over the millions of other websites out there. This requires a combination of serious internet marketing knowledge and often advertising investment.

 

 

 

3) Direct Marketing Opportunities:      

 

This is where you join a company that offer some form of product or service and you directly market it on the internet, as if it were your own. There are principally two types of Direct Marketing Opportunity; “Standard” and “Top Tier”.

 

Standard opportunities are generally those which are of a relatively low purchase cost to the end customer and require little or no initial investment to join.

 

Top Tier opportunities concentrate on offering high value products or services and require a much higher investment to join. Top Tier opportunities also tend to provide much more in the way of infrastructure and back-end support.

 

One of the most obvious differences is that the higher the value of the product or service, the higher the earning potential per sale or, put in another way, less sales are needed to earn a good income.

 

It is the opinion of many marketing experts that it takes as much time and effort to market a low value item as it does to market a high value item, therefore the higher the value the better it is, (within reason).

 

As with Affiliate Marketing, the biggest drawback is attracting potential buyers to your offering and this requires a combination of serious marketing knowledge and often advertising investment, however, unlike affiliate marketing, the Direct Marketing business model normally means you get 100% commission on sales and normally paid directly from the customer, not via a third party.

So here we are, 2009 has dawned and instead of looking forward to a brand new year with new surprises and new opportunities, most of the Western World, it seems, is full of doom and gloom. History has proven that not everyone suffers in an economic downturn and, in fact, some do very well indeed and I am living proof of exactly that. During the last major recession of the late 1980’s/early 1990’s I owned and ran a commercial credit reference agency that had it’s 4 best years ever during that downturn. In this recession I’m poised to do exactly the same, only with a different business.

 

We are now firmly in the internet age and the last 10 to 15 years have seen an explosion in the number of people and businesses trading on the internet. The home based business market has been growing at a phenomenal rate and is set to grow even faster in the next 5 years, particularly during hard economic times. The reason for this is simple and it stems from 3 major factors;

 

1) Companies are downsizing and those employees who are reliant on things like overtime to supplement their normal income are finding this being reduced or even cut out altogether. They are now having to work even longer hours for no extra money, just to keep their jobs. Many are choosing to take pay cuts rather than face redundancy.

 

2) Companies are ceasing to trade and redundancy and job losses are on the increase. Unemployment is rising at an alarming rate and replacement jobs are becoming harder to find.

 

3) Those who have already been made redundant or taken early retirement and those who live on a pension and savings/investments have found their income slashed by the collapse in the stock market and low interest rates.

 

As a result, many are turning to the internet as a way to earn money, either to bolster their existing income or to earn a living. It’s not surprising really when you think about it as the internet provides the biggest global marketplace on the planet. Sure, not everyone has (or will) become an internet millionaire, but then not everyone has the need or want to achieve that. Many people I know are happily earning as much as they would in a “traditional” job just by selling stuff on ebay! The only difference is that they are their own boss, work the hours they decide and ultimately line their own pockets instead of someone else’s. It all depends on your own personal goals, desires and expectations. The internet is merely the vehicle they choose to use for their own journey.

Well, here I am at 40 something and in the delightful position of being able to work my business from my own office at home. Because of the nature of the business it means I can decide to work the hours I want and fit the business in and around family life. The lovely lady wife works as a part-time Community Nurse and leaves at 8:45am, returning home about 2pm during the week plus 1 weekend in a month. I’m on my second marriage and have 2 little ankle-biters under 4 years old.

An idyllic situation you might think… and in many ways I couldn’t agree more, however I’ve had to contend with some fairly fundamental issues that I wasn’t really expecting.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved children; I was the eldest of 4 siblings, the youngest of which was born when I was 14 and I have 2 other children by my first marriage, so I’m not what you might call an amateur at this parenting thing, but I’ve discovered that it’s not quite as simple as I had always believed it was..!!

In days gone by, like a lot of men of my age, I would come home from work at about 6pm, pour myself a glass of whatever cold alcoholic beverage happened to be in the fridge and catch the news headlines on the telly. By then it would be 6:30 and time to spend the next 30 minutes being jumped on and mauled by 2 excited children before kissing them goodnight as thet got whisked off to bed. Of course, there were the weekends during which time I could excel at being daddy and do fun and interesting things with them, but always with the knowledge that mummy was there to take over when I really wanted her to.

Well that was then, and now is now, and things are somewhat different.

I think the biggest impact was the realisation that, when you have 2 little people under 4, they require almost constant attention. If it’s not one thing it’s another. And then there’s the fact that I seem to find myself permenantly clearing up after them. By the time mummy comes home I’m absolutely knackered..!!

So here’s a confession: I never really appreciated how physically and mentally tiring it can be with a young family. I now have a much greater understanding of the reality of being a “mum” and the importance of doing my fair share of the caring duties.

As a result of my career change, I’ve now had the opportunity to re-evaluate what is really important in my life. A mid-life crisis of sorts! I’ve learned that time doesn’t stand still and that it is possible to create a good work/life balance, if you really try. Although it’s hard work with the little ones, I wouldn’t want to go back to what used to be.

I’ve always known that I was a good dad, but now I’m working on becoming a better mum..!!
